Wheel Balancing in Bolton & Farnworth
Does your steering wheel start to shake at around 50 to 70mph, then smooth out again as you go faster or slower? That’s the classic sign of an unbalanced wheel. Quick Fix Tyres offers precision electronic wheel balancing across Bolton and Farnworth, carried out at your home, workplace or our Farnworth workshop. Balancing is included free with every new tyre we fit, and it’s also available on its own whenever you feel a vibration.
This page explains what wheel balancing actually does, what causes wheels to go out of balance, how we balance alloy wheels without spoiling their look and what to check if balancing doesn’t cure the shake. To book, call 07761 491 673.

What's Included in Our Wheel Balancing
Our wheel balancing is carried out on precision electronic equipment, so each wheel is measured accurately rather than judged by eye. It’s included free with every new tyre we fit, and for balancing on its own we confirm a clear price before any work starts. Here’s what you get:
| Included as standard | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Removal and cleaning of old weights | Old weights and dirt on the rim throw off the reading |
| Electronic spin balance of each wheel | Measures the exact size and position of any imbalance |
| Precise clip-on or stick-on weights | Corrects the imbalance at the right points on the rim |
| Re-spin to confirm | Proves the wheel is properly balanced before refitting |
| Tyre and wheel visual check | Spots bulges, damage or a bent rim that could cause vibration |
| Wheel nuts torqued correctly | Wheels refitted safely to your manufacturer's setting |
How We Balance Your Wheels
We balance wheels one at a time, using the same careful process on each. Most wheels take 10 to 15 minutes, so a full set of four is usually done in under an hour.
Call 07761 491 673 or request a quote, and tell us when the vibration happens and at what speed.
We lift the car safely, remove the wheel and check the tyre pressure.
Old weights, adhesive and dirt are removed so the new weights sit exactly where they're needed.
The wheel is mounted on our electronic balancer, which spins it and shows how much weight is needed and where.
We fit precise weights to both the inner and outer planes of the wheel where required.
We spin the wheel again to confirm a zero reading, then refit it and torque the nuts correctly.
If the balancer shows something unusual, such as a wheel that won't balance or a large amount of weight needed, we'll check the tyre and rim and tell you what we find.

What Is Wheel Balancing?
No wheel and tyre combination is perfectly even in weight all the way round. Tiny differences in the rubber, the tyre’s construction, the valve and the wheel itself create heavier spots. When the wheel spins hundreds of times a minute at motorway speed, those heavy spots pull it slightly up and down or side to side, and you feel that as a vibration.
Wheel balancing measures exactly where the heavy spots are and how heavy they are. We then fit small, precise weights on the opposite side of the rim to cancel them out, so the weight is spread evenly around the whole wheel. A balanced wheel spins smoothly, the tyre stays in even contact with the road and the vibration disappears.
Static vs Dynamic Balance
There are two kinds of imbalance, and a modern electronic balancer checks for both. Understanding them explains why a proper spin balance is more accurate than older methods.
| Type | What it is | What you feel |
|---|---|---|
| Static imbalance | A heavy spot in one place around the wheel, so it doesn't spin evenly about its centre | An up-and-down hop, felt as a bounce through the car |
| Dynamic imbalance | Uneven weight across the width of the wheel, between the inner and outer edges | A side-to-side wobble, felt as a shake through the steering wheel |
Most wheels have a mixture of both. Our electronic balancer measures the wheel in two planes, inner and outer, and tells us exactly how much weight to place on each side. That’s why we fit weights to both edges of the rim when needed, rather than just one, for a truly smooth result.
Signs Your Wheels Need Balancing
An unbalanced wheel usually makes itself known through vibration, but where you feel it tells you something too. Front wheel imbalance tends to come through the steering wheel, while rear wheel imbalance is more often felt through the seat and floor. Look out for:
- check_circleSteering wheel shake that appears around 50 to 70mph and fades at higher or lower speeds
- check_circleVibration through the seat or floor, especially on smooth motorway surfaces
- check_circlePatchy, scalloped wear on the tread, with dips or cups at intervals around the tyre
- check_circleA clean mark on the rim where a balance weight used to be
- check_circleVibration that started after a tyre was fitted, repaired or after hitting a pothole
Vibration isn't just uncomfortable. Left alone, it wears your tyres unevenly and puts extra strain on wheel bearings, steering joints and suspension parts, which are far more expensive to replace than a balance.
What Knocks a Wheel Out of Balance?
Even a perfectly balanced wheel won’t stay that way forever. These are the most common reasons we find wheels out of balance in Bolton and Farnworth:
Lost Balance Weights
Weights can be knocked off by potholes, kerbs and speed bumps, or fall away when the adhesive on stick-on weights ages. Even one missing weight of a few grams can bring back a noticeable shake at speed.
Tyre Wear
As tyres wear, the rubber doesn't always wear perfectly evenly around the tyre. Over thousands of miles, the balance slowly drifts, which is why vibration can creep in gradually on an older set of tyres.
Tyre Fitting and Repairs
Any time a tyre is removed from the wheel, for a puncture repair or a new tyre, the balance changes. That's why every tyre we fit or repair is rebalanced before it goes back on the car.
Impacts and Mud
A hard pothole strike can bend a rim slightly or shift the tyre on the wheel. Thick mud or ice packed inside the wheel can also cause a temporary imbalance, which is worth ruling out after a trip down rural lanes.
Balancing Alloy Wheels: Clip-On vs Stick-On Weights
The type of weight we use depends on your wheels. Both types are equally effective; the difference is how they attach and how they look.
| Clip-on weights | Stick-on (adhesive) weights | |
|---|---|---|
| How they attach | Hammered onto the rim edge with a spring clip | Bonded to the inside of the rim with strong adhesive |
| Best for | Steel wheels and some alloys designed for them | Most alloy wheels |
| Appearance | Visible on the rim edge | Hidden behind the spokes, so the wheel face stays clean |
| Risk to alloys | Can mark the lip of an alloy if used on the outer face | No contact with the visible face of the wheel |
On alloy wheels, we place stick-on weights on the inside of the barrel wherever possible, so your wheels look exactly as they should from the outside. Before fitting them, we clean the rim thoroughly so the adhesive bonds properly and the weights stay put.
When Balancing Won't Fix the Vibration
Balancing cures most speed-related vibration, but not all of it. If the shake is still there after an accurate balance, something else is usually to blame. Our technician will check for these common causes and tell you what we find:
- check_circleA bent or buckled rim from a pothole or kerb, which can't be balanced out
- check_circleA tyre with an internal fault, such as a shifted belt or a bulge, that makes it run out of round
- check_circleWorn steering or suspension parts, like track rod ends or wheel bearings
- check_circleWarped brake discs, which usually cause vibration when braking rather than when cruising
- check_circleDriveshaft or CV joint wear, often felt under acceleration
Because we specialise in tyres and wheels, we can usually tell from the balancer readings and a quick inspection whether the problem is the wheel, the tyre or something deeper in the car. If it's outside what we do, we'll say so clearly.
Wheel Balancing vs Wheel Alignment
People often mix up balancing and alignment, but they solve different problems. Balancing is about the weight around each wheel, and its job is to stop vibration. Alignment is about the angles the wheels sit at, and its job is to stop the car pulling and the tyres wearing on one edge.
A simple way to remember it: if the car shakes, think balancing; if it pulls, think alignment. Many cars benefit from both, especially after a hard pothole strike or when new tyres are fitted. See our wheel alignment page for more detail.
The Benefits of Balanced Wheels
Balanced wheels make every journey smoother and quieter, with no shaking steering wheel on the motorway. Your tyres wear evenly across the tread, so they last longer and you replace them less often. There’s less strain on wheel bearings, steering joints and suspension, which saves money on repairs. And because the tyres stay in steady contact with the road, grip and braking are more consistent, especially in the wet.
Why Choose Quick Fix Tyres for Wheel Balancing
Balancing looks simple, but accuracy is everything. A wheel that’s a few grams out can still shake at motorway speed. Here’s why drivers across Bolton and Farnworth trust us to get it right.
Precision Electronic Equipment
We balance every wheel on precision electronic equipment that measures both the inner and outer planes of the wheel. That means we correct both up-and-down hop and side-to-side wobble, not just one. We re-spin every wheel to confirm it's balanced before it goes back on.
We Come to You
Our mobile van carries electronic balancing equipment, so we can balance your wheels on your driveway or at your workplace. There's no need to book a garage slot and wait around. You can also visit our workshop at 1 Briarfield Rd, Farnworth, if you prefer.
Care for Your Alloys
We use stick-on weights on the inside of alloy wheels, so the face of the wheel stays clean and unmarked. Old weights and adhesive are removed carefully, and the rim is cleaned before new weights go on. Your wheels look the same when we leave as when we arrived.
Honest Diagnosis
If balancing won't fix your vibration, we'll tell you why instead of charging you to try again. We'll check for bent rims, tyre faults and worn parts, and explain what we find. Our Google reviews regularly mention our quick service and honest, friendly approach.

Wheel Balancing FAQs
How much does wheel balancing cost?expand_more
Wheel balancing is included free with every new tyre we fit. For balancing on its own, call 07761 491 673 and we'll give you a clear price for your car before any work starts.
How long does wheel balancing take?expand_more
About 10 to 15 minutes per wheel, so a set of four is usually done in under an hour.
Do I need to balance all four wheels?expand_more
Not always. If the vibration comes through the steering wheel, the front wheels are usually the cause. We'll often recommend checking all four, as rear imbalance can still wear tyres and cause vibration through the seat.
How often should wheels be balanced?expand_more
Whenever a tyre is fitted or repaired, and any time you notice a new vibration. It's also worth checking every 12 months or after hitting a deep pothole or kerb.
Can you balance wheels at my home?expand_more
Yes. Our mobile van carries electronic balancing equipment, so we can balance your wheels on your driveway or at your workplace, as long as the car is on firm, level ground.
Why is my steering wheel shaking only at certain speeds?expand_more
An unbalanced wheel creates a vibration that peaks at a certain speed, often between 50 and 70mph, then fades as you speed up or slow down. That speed-specific shake is a classic sign that balancing is needed.
