Our First Tyre Guides Are on the Way
We're writing practical guides on punctures, tread depth, wheel care and roadside safety. In the meantime, our service pages answer the questions we get asked most.
The 1.6mm Tread Limit and the 20p Test
UK law says car tyres need at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way around. Driving on an illegal tyre can mean a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre.
Quick check: push a 20p coin into the main groove. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be close to the limit and it's time to get it checked.
